How to simulate a hardware wallet with the device included

A hardware wallet scene has two halves that have to agree: the portfolio, and the device it is supposedly held on. Set the device up first and the portfolio gets built inside a constraint. Do it the other way round and the two halves disagree, which is the thing people notice.

The short answer

Add a device from the profile screen, pick the model, then open My Ledger and install the blockchain apps for the chains your scene needs — one Ethereum app covers every EVM network. Set balances across those assets, and the storage bar and app list will match the portfolio above them. Nothing pairs with real hardware and no recovery phrase exists at any point.

Before you start

  • RPWallet open on your phone with the Ledger Live interface selected
  • A decision about which device model the scene is about
  • The list of chains the portfolio needs to span

Setting up the device

Six steps, in this order. The order is the point — every step after the first is constrained by the one before it.

  1. Open the profile and add a device

    Add new

    Tap the profile icon at the top left of the home screen. Under Devices, tap Add new. If you have no devices yet, the same sheet opens from the empty state.

  2. Pick the model the scene is about

    Ledger model

    Choose from Ledger Flex, Stax, Nano Gen5, Nano X, Nano S Plus, Nano S or Blue. This is not cosmetic — each model renders its own illustration, and the three touchscreen models (Flex, Stax, Gen5) additionally expose a lock-screen picture and a device language that the button models do not have. Pick the one your viewer is holding.

  3. Name it and set it available

    Device name

    Give the simulated device a descriptive name up to 32 characters. Leave Available now on when the lesson needs the device to appear connectable, or turn it off when demonstrating a disconnected-device state.

  4. Install the blockchain apps you need

    Tap the device to open My Ledger, then work down the app list. Each app carries its own version and size in kilobytes, and the storage bar fills as you install. Install only what the scene needs: chains are signed by family, not by badge, so a single Ethereum app covers Polygon, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, BNB Smart Chain and around twenty other EVM networks. Bitcoin, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Cosmos, Tron and Zcash each need their own.

  5. Set balances that match the apps

    Go back to the portfolio and set the balances for the assets those apps sign for. This is where the order pays off: you cannot accidentally show a Solana position on a device with no Solana app, because you installed the apps first and the portfolio is being built inside that list.

  6. Add a staking position, if the scene needs one

    Earn

    In Earn, pick an asset and a validator and enter an amount above that network's simulated minimum. Rewards accrue from the moment the simulated stake confirms. Treat the position age and returns as illustrative, and identify them as simulated in the lesson or capture.

If something goes wrong

The storage bar looks empty even though I set a big balance.
Storage represents installed blockchain apps, not holdings, so a balance does not fill it. For a technically accurate device-management lesson, open My Ledger and install the apps for the chains being demonstrated.
I installed an app for every EVM network in the demo.
Roughly twenty EVM networks share one Ethereum device app, so a walkthrough spanning Base, Arbitrum and Polygon needs the Ethereum app rather than three separate device apps. Remove extras so the lesson reflects how Ledger's app-family mapping works.
The device shows as Not connected.
The Available now toggle was off when you added it, or the device was never opened. Tap the device row to connect it, or use the options menu and Open My Ledger. A disconnected device is a legitimate state to film, but not the one you want behind an active portfolio.
My device model has no lock screen picture option.
Only Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 have one, because only those models have a screen to put a picture on. If you need that option in shot, the model choice in step two is what decides it.
The staking rewards look implausibly large.
Rewards accrue from the simulated confirmation time. For an educational demo, explain that the age and return are illustrative, use values that make the calculation easy to follow, and keep the simulation label visible.
I want to show the device setup and recovery phrase step.
There isn't one, deliberately. Nothing here generates, stores or asks for a recovery phrase, because there is no wallet behind the screens. That is the reason this is safer to film than a real device — and it is worth saying out loud in a tutorial, since anything that does ask for 24 words is an attack.

The device is the differentiator, not the balance

Ledger Live is a companion app for physical hardware, so a useful training demo needs more than a portfolio total. The simulated device manager lets a lesson cover models, firmware, blockchain apps, and storage without connecting real hardware.

Nothing here touches real hardware

There is no Bluetooth pairing, no cable, no recovery phrase entry and no chain to broadcast to. The device you add is one you configured. Say so when you publish — a visible label in the frame costs a line and removes the ambiguity entirely.

Can I show more than one device?

Yes. The Devices list holds several and collapses past three, which is worth knowing if the scene is about someone who upgraded — an old Nano S alongside a new Flex is a more specific story than one device on its own.

How long does the whole setup take?

About six minutes for a simulated device, its apps and a demo portfolio. A staking lesson may take longer if you want to explain how the simulator calculates rewards over elapsed time.
